How do I add an MCP server to Claude Desktop?
Open your claude_desktop_config.json (via Settings → Developer → Edit Config), paste the mcpServers block from the server's detail page, and restart the app. The server's tools then show up in the chat interface.
Why does a server not appear after I add it?
The most common causes are a JSON syntax error in the config file, a missing runtime (npx requires Node.js, uvx requires Python's uv), or an unset environment variable such as an API key. Restart Claude Desktop after every config change.
Are remote (HTTP) MCP servers supported?
Claude Desktop added support for remote MCP servers in addition to local stdio servers. Where a project offers a hosted endpoint, the detail page notes it — otherwise the default local stdio configuration always works.
