🎓 Squad for Kids

🌍 English | עברית | العربية | Español | Français | 中文 | Português | Deutsch | 日本語 | Русский

AI-powered personalized learning teams for children.

Every child learns differently. Schools can’t personalize. Squad for Kids can.

The Problem

Every classroom has 25-35 students, one teacher, and one pace. Some kids race ahead and get bored. Others fall behind and lose confidence. Parents want to help, but lack the time, expertise, or patience to tutor every subject. Private tutoring costs $40-100/hour — out of reach for most families.

The result? Millions of kids grow up thinking they’re “bad at math” or “not a reader” — when they just needed someone to explain it their way.

The Solution

Squad for Kids gives every child their own team of AI learning specialists — each with a unique personality, teaching style, and subject expertise. They adapt to your child’s age, interests, and pace. They celebrate wins, help with struggles, and make learning feel like play.

It’s like having a personal school — with the patience of a saint, the creativity of a YouTuber, and the heart of a great teacher.

How It Works

  1. 📝 Tell us your name — the squad greets your child personally
  2. 🎂 Enter your grade — maps to the right curriculum automatically
  3. 🏙️ Share your city — auto-detects country, curriculum system, and language
  4. 📚 Curriculum loads — US Common Core, UK National, Israeli Bagrut, and more
  5. 🎬 Pick your universe — agents are hired dynamically as characters from your child’s favorite show/game!

✨ Key Features

🎯 Age-Adaptive Teaching

Content difficulty adjusts automatically. A 6-year-old gets simple words and pictures. A 12-year-old gets deeper explanations and challenges. The squad grows with your child. Grade transitions are detected automatically — when your child is ready for the next level, the curriculum updates seamlessly.

💡 Interest-Driven Learning

Your child picks their interests — dinosaurs, space, Minecraft, cooking, soccer — and the squad weaves those into every lesson. Math problems about dinosaur populations. Science experiments inspired by space. Reading stories about their favorite topics.

📊 Progress Tracking & Parent Reports

Parents receive weekly reports including:

  • What topics were covered and time spent learning
  • Areas of strength and areas needing attention
  • Suggested activities for the weekend
  • Emotional wellbeing indicators

🛡️ Safety & Privacy

  • No personal data stored — conversations stay on your device
  • Age-appropriate content filtering — built-in guardrails for every age group
  • Conversation safety — agents redirect inappropriate topics gently
  • Open source — inspect every line of code yourself
  • Minimal data collection — only first name, birth date, and city

🎮 Gamification

  • XP Points — earn experience for completing lessons
  • Levels — progress through beginner, intermediate, advanced
  • Badges — collect achievements (“Math Wizard”, “Bookworm”, “Science Explorer”)
  • Streaks — maintain daily learning streaks for bonus rewards

🤗 Emotional Support

Study Buddy detects when your child is frustrated, bored, or anxious and responds with empathy. Brain breaks, encouragement, and gentle pace adjustments keep learning positive.

🔊 Read Aloud

For younger children or auditory learners, lessons can be converted to audio using text-to-speech. The squad reads stories, explains problems, and gives instructions out loud.

📅 Study Scheduler

Automated study session reminders, homework tracking, and spaced repetition scheduling. Parents can configure daily routines and the squad manages the rest.

🚀 Quick Start for Parents

Your child gets their own personal copy! Fork this repo to create a private learning environment. All progress stays in YOUR GitHub account.

Step 1: Fork This Repo 🍴

  1. Go to github.com/tamirdresher/squad-for-kids

  2. Click the “Fork” button in the top-right corner

  3. On the “Create a new fork” page, keep the defaults and click “Create fork”

  4. ✅ You now have your own copy at github.com/YOUR-USERNAME/squad-for-kids

💡 Why fork? Your child’s progress (profile, reports, learning history) stays in YOUR GitHub account — private and under your control. You also get updates from the original repo when new features are added.

Step 2: Open YOUR Fork ⚠️

  1. Make sure you’re on your fork (check the URL — it should say YOUR-USERNAME/squad-for-kids, NOT tamirdresher/squad-for-kids)
  2. 🖥️ Important: Use a laptop or desktop — not a phone or tablet

Step 3: Create a Codespace 🚀

  1. Click the green “Code” button → “Codespaces” tab → “Create codespace on main”

  2. ⏱️ Wait 1-2 minutes for VS Code to fully load (you’ll see a code editor with files on the side)

Step 4: Select the Squad Agent 🤖

  1. Open Copilot Chat — click the chat icon 💬 in the sidebar, or press Ctrl+Alt+I

  2. At the bottom of the chat window, select the “squad” agent from the dropdown

  3. Click “Autopilot (Preview)” at the bottom to enable autonomous mode

Step 5: Start Chatting! 💬

  1. Type in your language! Start with: היי! אני רוצה לבנות משחק! (or in English: Hi! I want to build a game!)
  2. The squad will greet your child, ask their name and age, and start the adventure! 🎉

🖥️ Desktop Setup (alternative to Codespace)

Prefer to work on your own computer instead of a Codespace? We have a one-command setup wizard!

Windows: Open PowerShell and run:

irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tamirdresher/squad-for-kids/main/setup.ps1 | iex

macOS/Linux: Open Terminal and run:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tamirdresher/squad-for-kids/main/setup.sh | bash

The wizard checks prerequisites, installs missing tools, sets up your child’s profile, and gets everything ready — all with friendly bilingual prompts. No technical knowledge needed!

📖 Prefer written instructions? See the Desktop Setup Guide for step-by-step instructions.

What Parents Get 👨‍👩‍👧

Your child’s fork is their personal learning space. You can see everything:

  • Student profile at student-profile.json — your child’s identity, interests, and progress
  • Weekly reports at .squad/reports/ — what was learned, strengths, areas to practice
  • Teaching plan at .squad/teaching-plan.md — current curriculum progress
  • Full commit history — every learning session is tracked in git
  • Email notifications — optional parent report delivery via email
  • Full control — review, adjust, or restart anytime

📖 Detailed parent guide: docs/parent-guide.md — how to monitor progress, sync updates, manage multiple children, and more.

🔄 Coming Back Next Time

No need to create a new Codespace! Go to github.com/codespaces and you’ll find the workspace you already created. Just click on it.

🔄 Getting Updates from the Original Repo

When new features, templates, or curriculum content are added to the original repo, you can sync them to your fork:

  1. On your fork’s GitHub page, you’ll see a banner: “This branch is X commits behind tamirdresher:main”
  2. Click “Sync fork” → “Update branch”
  3. Your child’s personal data (profile, reports) is safe — only the curriculum and features update!

🧠 System Architecture

Note: The .squad/agents/ directory does not exist in the template. Agents are hired dynamically during onboarding based on the child’s name, age, and interests. The Squad agent generates themed charters (Minecraft, Frozen, etc.) on the fly.

File Purpose
.github/agents/squad.agent.md Main agent — orchestrates init, learning, and all agent interactions
.squad/student-profile.json Kid’s profile — identity, curriculum, cast, gamification state
.squad/teaching-plan.md Current learning plan — subjects, progress, weekly schedule
.squad/reports/weekly-*.md Parent reports — weekly summaries of learning progress
.squad/skills/curriculum-lookup/SKILL.md Skill: maps country + grade → curriculum → subjects
.squad/skills/kid-friendly/SKILL.md Skill: age-appropriate communication guidelines
.squad/skills/study-scheduler/SKILL.md Skill: automated study sessions and homework reminders
.squad/skills/parent-notifications/SKILL.md Skill: parent reports via email
.squad/skills/read-aloud/SKILL.md Skill: text-to-speech for younger kids
.squad/skills/homework-tracker/SKILL.md Skill: assignment monitoring and deadline tracking
