OpenClaw Skill: n8n

An OpenClaw skill for designing, building, debugging, and operating n8n workflows.

This repo contains the skill folder n8n/ (with SKILL.md, scripts, and references) that you can install into OpenClaw.

What this skill helps with

  • Designing n8n automations (triggers, data flow, error handling, idempotency)
  • Creating/modifying exported workflow JSON safely
  • Debugging executions and common webhook/credential/data-mapping issues
  • Operating n8n via the public REST API (list/create/update/activate workflows, inspect executions) using the bundled helper script

Install

You can install skills either per-workspace or globally.

  1. Copy the n8n/ folder into your OpenClaw workspace:
# from this repo root
mkdir -p /path/to/your/openclaw/workspace/skills
cp -R ./n8n /path/to/your/openclaw/workspace/skills/n8n
  1. Start a new OpenClaw session (skills are snapshotted at session start).

Option B: Install globally

mkdir -p ~/.openclaw/skills
cp -R ./n8n ~/.openclaw/skills/n8n

Then start a new OpenClaw session.

Configuration (REST API mode)

For API-powered operations, set these environment variables for the skill:

  • N8N_BASE_URL — your n8n base URL (include any reverse-proxy path prefix)
  • N8N_API_KEY — an n8n API key created in n8n → Settings → n8n API

Example ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json snippet:

{
  "skills": {
    "entries": {
      "n8n": {
        "enabled": true,
        "env": {
          "N8N_BASE_URL": "https://n8n.example.com",
          "N8N_API_KEY": "REPLACE_ME"
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

After changing config/env, restart the gateway or start a new session so the environment is reloaded.

Quick smoke test (optional)

The skill bundles a helper CLI for n8n’s REST API:

python3 ./n8n/scripts/n8n_api.py --help

Typical usage requires N8N_BASE_URL and N8N_API_KEY to be set in the environment.

Repository layout

  • n8n/SKILL.md — skill instructions
  • n8n/scripts/n8n_api.py — helper script for REST API calls
  • n8n/references/ — API notes, workflow JSON guide, troubleshooting, security
  • n8n/assets/ — templates (e.g., workflow spec template)
