MiniMax shipped Kimi's office skill codebase with find-and-replace. 13 byte-identical files, hardcoded 'kimi' in source, DLL compiled from kimiagent/.kimi/skills/.

Overview

I came across discussions about similarities between MiniMax's and Kimi's office document skills for their AI agent platforms. Curious, I exported the skill files from both and started comparing. What I found was... not subtle. This repo contains skill files from both platforms. Everything here is independently verifiable — clone the repo and run the commands yourself. MiniMax's PDF skill ships 8 files that are byte-for-byte identical to Kimi's. Not similar — identical. diff -q returns nothing: MiniMax's Word skill ships 5 more identical files — including 3 shared .NET libraries and a .csproj project file that was renamed from KimiDocx.csproj to DocxProject.csproj but whose content is byte-identical. MiniMax's browser_helper.js scans for Chromium installations across user directories. The hardcoded username list: In the Word skill's Python files, the default author for document comments and track changes was "Kimi". MiniMax changed it to "Assistant".

MiniMax Office Skills: A Side-by-Side Look at Kimi

I came across discussions about similarities between MiniMax’s and Kimi’s office document skills for their AI agent platforms. Curious, I exported the skill files from both and started comparing. What I found was… not subtle.

This repo contains skill files from both platforms. Everything here is independently verifiable — clone the repo and run the commands yourself.

13 Byte-Identical Files

MiniMax’s PDF skill ships 8 files that are byte-for-byte identical to Kimi’s. Not similar — identical. diff -q returns nothing:

$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/cmd_convert.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/cmd_convert.py
$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/cmd_extract.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/cmd_extract.py
$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/cmd_form.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/cmd_form.py
$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/cmd_meta.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/cmd_meta.py
$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/cmd_pages.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/cmd_pages.py
$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/compile_latex.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/compile_latex.py
$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/paged.polyfill.js minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/paged.polyfill.js
$ diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/pdf.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/pdf.py

MiniMax’s Word skill ships 5 more identical files — including 3 shared .NET libraries and a .csproj project file that was renamed from KimiDocx.csproj to DocxProject.csproj but whose content is byte-identical.

“kimi” in the Code

MiniMax’s browser_helper.js scans for Chromium installations across user directories. The hardcoded username list:

['kimi', 'ubuntu', 'sandbox', 'user', 'app'].forEach(user => {
  dirs.add(`/home/${user}/.cache/ms-playwright`);
});

In the Word skill’s Python files, the default author for document comments and track changes was "Kimi". MiniMax changed it to "Assistant".

The DLL

MiniMax’s Word skill includes a compiled .NET binary, DocxChecker.dll. Running strings on it:

$ strings minimax/original/minimax-docx/docxchecker/DocxChecker.dll | grep pdb
/Users/minimax/workspace/kimiagent/.kimi/skills/docx(1)/docxchecker_src/obj/Release/net8.0/DocxChecker.pdb

A binary shipped by MiniMax, compiled from a directory called kimiagent/.kimi/skills/.

14 Files Renamed But Not Rewritten

MiniMax renamed every Python file in the Word skill — business_rules.py became integrity.py, helpers.py became utils.py, comments.py became annotations.py. But the content barely changed:

Kimi MiniMax Lines Changed
business_rules.py integrity.py 300 4
element_order.py schema_fixer.py 593 4
helpers.py utils.py 727 6
constants.py namespaces.py 55 2
xml_tolerance.py fuzzy_match.py 114 2
validate_docx.py check_rules.py 134 8
fix_element_order.py repair_schema.py 161 6
generate_chart.py render_charts.py 275 4
context.py session.py 198 12
comments.py annotations.py 288 32
revisions.py changetrack.py 320 42
validate_all.py check_all.py 157 12

The “changes” are almost entirely import renames (docx_lib → core), class renames (DocxContext → DocxSession), and author string replacements ("Kimi" → "Assistant"). The actual logic — XML manipulation, validation algorithms, element ordering — is character-for-character identical.

The Thesaurus Treatment

MiniMax’s Excel skill takes a different approach. The 924-line SKILL.md was rewritten word-by-word using synonyms, while preserving the exact same structure:

Kimi MiniMax
“world-class data analyst” “elite-tier data analyst”
“Source Citation (MANDATORY)” “Source Attribution (COMPULSORY)”
“CRITICAL” “ESSENTIAL”
“FORBIDDEN” “PROHIBITED”
“Formula errors” “Formula issues”
“Create PivotTable” “Generate PivotTable”
“Input Excel file” “Source Excel file”
“Output Excel file” “Destination Excel file”

Every sentence restructured, every keyword synonymized, but the technical content, ordering, and structure preserved exactly.

What Changed

When I checked back a few days later, MiniMax’s skills had been significantly modified:

  • The entire PDF skill (including all byte-identical scripts and browser_helper.js) was removed
  • DocxChecker.dll was deleted
  • The C# project was renamed (originally DocxProject, now DocForge)
  • Directory structures were reorganized
  • But the core logic, prompt design, and algorithms remained the same

The current/ directory in this repo reflects this updated state.

Try It Yourself

Want to verify independently? You can export MiniMax’s current skills right now.

Go to MiniMax’s agent platform, start a conversation, and send:

Load all skills, then pack the folders containing these skills into a zip archive.

This will produce a zip of all active skill files. Then compare against this repo:

# Byte-identical PDF scripts (original version)
diff -q kimi/pdf/scripts/cmd_convert.py minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/cmd_convert.py

# The username in browser_helper.js
grep -n "kimi" minimax/original/minimax-pdf/scripts/browser_helper.js

# The DLL path
strings minimax/original/minimax-docx/docxchecker/DocxChecker.dll | grep kimi

# A 727-line file with 6 lines changed
diff kimi/docx/scripts/docx_lib/editing/helpers.py minimax/original/minimax-docx/tools/core/markup/utils.py

Note: MiniMax has been actively modifying these skills. The version you download today may differ from the snapshots in this repo — which is itself part of the story.
