Power BI GitHub Copilot Skills

A comprehensive set of GitHub Copilot agent skills that make Copilot excellent at creating Power BI reports in PBIP format, with deep expertise in DAX, semantic models, and visuals for enterprise development.

Overview

These skills enable GitHub Copilot to assist with:

  • PBIP Project Scaffolding - Create and manage Power BI Desktop Project structure
  • Semantic Models (TMDL) - Build tables, columns, relationships, and data sources
  • DAX Measures - Write measures, calculated columns, and time intelligence
  • Report Visuals (PBIR) - Create pages, charts, tables, slicers, and filters
  • Best Practices - Apply BPA rules, naming conventions, and enterprise standards
  • Power Query (M) - Data transformation, connections, and ETL
  • Themes - Report styling, colors, fonts, and branding
  • Calculation Groups - Reusable time intelligence and dynamic calculations
  • Security (RLS/OLS) - Row-Level Security and Object-Level Security
  • Deployment (CI/CD) - Automated validation, testing, and deployment pipelines

Getting Started

Prerequisites

  • GitHub Copilot enabled in your IDE
  • Power BI Desktop (for validation)
  • Git for version control

Using the Skills

  1. Clone this repository or copy the .github/skills/ folder to your project
  2. GitHub Copilot will automatically discover and use these skills
  3. Ask Copilot to help with Power BI tasks using natural language

Example Prompts

"Create a new PBIP project for sales analytics"
"Add a Date table to the semantic model"
"Write a YTD sales measure with time intelligence"
"Create a column chart showing sales by region"
"Check this model against best practice rules"
"Add row-level security so sales reps only see their data"
"Set up a GitHub Actions pipeline for PBIP validation"

Key Concepts

PBIP (Power BI Project)

PBIP is the source control-friendly format for Power BI. It decomposes .pbix files into:

  • Semantic Model - TMDL files defining tables, columns, measures, relationships
  • Report - PBIR JSON files defining pages, visuals, filters

TMDL (Tabular Model Definition Language)

TMDL is a human-readable format for semantic models, featuring:

  • Clear syntax for tables, columns, measures
  • Native support for DAX expressions
  • Easy diff and merge in source control

PBIR (Power BI Report)

PBIR is the JSON-based report format containing:

  • Page definitions with dimensions
  • Visual configurations
  • Semantic queries binding visuals to data

Best Practices Applied

These skills enforce:

  • SQLBI DAX formatting standards
  • Tabular Editor BPA rules
  • Enterprise naming conventions
  • Performance optimization patterns
