What This Does
This is a Claude Code Agent Skill that gives your AI agent deep product management knowledge based on the Hooked framework by Nir Eyal.
When activated, your AI agent will:
- Audit features against the Hook Model (Trigger → Action → Variable Reward → Investment)
- Identify retention gaps — dead ends, missing triggers, predictable rewards, invisible sunk costs
- Design engagement loops — onboarding flows, gamification, notifications, re-engagement
- Reduce friction using BJ Fogg’s Behavior Model (6 factors of ability)

The Hook Model
Every habit-forming product runs this cycle:
Trigger → Action → Variable Reward → Investment
↑ |
└──────────────────────────────────────┘
| Step | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | What emotion or cue brings them back? | Uncertainty → Google, Boredom → YouTube |
| Action | What’s the easiest thing they can do? | Scroll a feed, type a search, tap play |
| Variable Reward | Does it satisfy AND leave them wanting more? | Feed content varies, search results surprise |
| Investment | What makes the product better with use? | Data, content, followers, reputation |
Three Types of Variable Rewards
| Type | Source | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 🏛️ Tribe | Other people | Likes, comments, social validation |
| 🏹 Hunt | Resources & information | Feeds, search results, discovery |
| 🏆 Self | Mastery & completion | Levels, streaks, achievements |
When To Use
Activate this skill when you’re working on:
- Onboarding flows & first-run experiences
- Gamification systems (XP, streaks, badges, challenges)
- Notification & email strategies
- Engagement loops & retention mechanics
- Pricing & conversion flows
- Feature prioritization for retention impact
- Product audits & teardowns
Feature Design Checklist
Before shipping any engagement feature, the agent will evaluate:
- [ ] Does this reduce friction rather than just adding motivation?
- [ ] Is there a variable reward component, or is the outcome predictable?
- [ ] Does this create stored value that makes the product stickier?
- [ ] Does this load the next trigger to bring the user back?
- [ ] Does this address a real internal trigger the user experiences frequently?
- [ ] Will this behavior occur at least weekly?
Example Usage
You: Audit my SaaS dashboard for retention issues
Agent (with skill active): Let me evaluate your dashboard against the Hook Model...
→ TRIGGER: Your lifecycle emails stop after 14 days — nothing brings users back after that
→ ACTION: Article generation requires 6 form fields — reduce to 1-click from presets
→ VARIABLE REWARD: All XP gains are fixed at 5 per action — add random bonus chance
→ INVESTMENT: Users can't see total articles written — sunk cost is invisible
