Unofficial LM Studio patch for the Mapbox MCP server 0.15.1

Unofficial. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Mapbox or 407 ETR. Use at your own risk. Toll and fuel figures are estimates, not quotes.

This patch replaces a few files inside @mapbox/mcp-server version 0.15.1 so that local models in LM Studio (tested with Gemma 4 12B and GPT-OSS-20B) get usable turn-by-turn directions, costs and maps.

What it changes

Install (Windows example)

1. Install the stock server once: npm install @mapbox/[email protected]
2. Back up node_modules\@mapbox\mcp-server\dist.
3. Extract this zip into node_modules\@mapbox\mcp-server\ so its dist\ merges over the existing one (tools\, TESTING.md and this README are extras).
4. In LM Studio’s mcp.json:

5. Restart LM Studio fully.

Reinstalling or updating @mapbox/mcp-server overwrites the patch. It only works with 0.15.1.

Checking the 407 zone boundaries

The 13 interchange points in 407etr-rates.json decide which zone each kilometre falls in. Check them with your own token (it’s only sent to api.mapbox.com and never printed):

Each row should say OK. For a FIX row, open the Google Maps link, find where the crossing road meets the 407, right-click on the 407 lanes at that spot, click the coordinates to copy them, paste them as lat/lon, and run the checker again. When all rows are OK, set "approximate": false on each point.

Updating 407 ETR rates

Edit dist/esm/tools/directions-tool/407etr-rates.json. Each line is one row of the 407 ETR rate chart (Zone 1 to Zone 12, cents/km). Change valid_from / valid_through for the new year. Outside those dates, toll cells show -. Most boundary_points (the interchanges between zones) are approximate. Correct them with exact coordinates and set "approximate": false.

Limitations

• Estimates exclude taxes, monthly/annual 407 fees and unflagged holidays. Only the 407 ETR is priced; other toll roads (e.g. US toll roads, bridges) show -.
• Each map adds one extra Directions request to your Mapbox usage.
• Very long routes may be too detailed for a static map image.

The original Mapbox MCP server is MIT-licensed (see LICENSE.md, Copyright © 2025 Mapbox, Inc.). The modified files keep that license. The patch additions are offered under the same MIT terms.
