Ampworth's MCP servers: UK solar PV and heat pump calculators and guides, following the MCS standards

Overview

Ampworth works out solar panel and heat pump figures for UK homes using the methods published in the MCS standards, and shows the working. This repository describes its MCP servers, which give AI assistants the same calculators and guides. The servers are hosted by Ampworth. The same calculations are also available as a JSON API, described at https://ampworth.com/developers. Ampworth MCP servers

Ampworth works out solar panel and heat pump figures for UK homes using the methods published in the MCS standards, and shows the working. This repository describes its MCP servers, which give AI assistants the same calculators and guides.

The servers are hosted by Ampworth. There’s nothing to install or run, and you don’t need a key, an account or a sign-up.

Servers

Server Address Tools
Everything https://ampworth.com/mcp All 15 tools below
Calculators https://ampworth.com/mcp/calculators The 11 calculators and list_calculators
Documents https://ampworth.com/mcp/documents search_documents, get_document and list_documents

Use https://ampworth.com/mcp unless you want only one set of tools. All three servers use streamable HTTP and are stateless, and every tool is read-only.

Connect

Claude: in Settings > Connectors, add a custom connector with the URL https://ampworth.com/mcp. Leave authentication empty.

Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http ampworth https://ampworth.com/mcp

ChatGPT: in Settings > Apps, turn on developer mode, then create an app with the URL https://ampworth.com/mcp and no authentication.

Other clients that read an mcpServers configuration:

  "mcpServers": {
    "ampworth": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://ampworth.com/mcp"

Tools

Tool What it does Method
solar_pv_system_size Works out the solar array a home needs, including panels, battery and savings, from a postcode, a roof direction and a year of electricity use MIS 3002
heat_pump_size Estimates a house’s heat loss from its fuel bills, and says whether a quoted heat pump looks the right size MIS 3005-D
solar_pv_output Annual generation of a known array MIS 3002
solar_pv_shading Shade factor from the sunpath chart MGD 005
solar_pv_self_consumption How much generation is used at home, with or without a battery MGD 003
room_heat_loss Design heat loss for one room MIS 3005-D
radiator_flow_temperature The flow temperature a radiator needs MGD 007
hot_water_cylinder Hot water demand and cylinder size MIS 3005-D
heat_pump_noise Sound level at a neighbour’s window, for permitted development MCS 020
heat_pump_running_cost Running cost compared with the current fuel MCS 007
connection_route Whether solar panels and batteries can connect under G98 or need approval under G99 ENA EREC G98 / G99
list_calculators Lists the calculators and the fixed values their fields accept
search_documents Searches Ampworth’s guides, articles and questions
get_document Returns one document in full, as Markdown
list_documents Lists the documents, filtered by kind, category, level or reader

The same calculations are also available as a JSON API, described at . Each calculator runs from a plain link, too: for example, .

Command line and local server

For clients that start MCP servers on your machine instead of connecting to a URL, or to run the calculators from a terminal, use the ampworth command line:

brew install ampworth/tap/ampworth
ampworth mcp # a local MCP server over standard input and output

It calls the same API, so its answers are the same.

Skills

ampworth/skills has skills that guide an assistant through the commonest questions with these tools: checking a heat pump quote, sizing a solar system and battery, and checking heat pump noise for permitted development. It’s also a Claude plugin that bundles the skills with the connector.

Try it

  • “I’ve been quoted a 12 kW heat pump for my 3-bedroom house in Birmingham. We use about 12,000 kWh of gas a year. Is that the right size?”
  • “We’re in Bristol, BS1 5TR. Our roof faces south-west and we use 3,600 kWh of electricity a year. What size solar system do we need, with a battery?”
  • “What questions should I ask an installer before signing a heat pump quote?”

Scope

The methods and data cover the United Kingdom only. The answers are for understanding a system and checking a quotation. An installation still needs a survey and a design from a certified installer. Ampworth isn’t affiliated with MCS, sells nothing and recommends no installer.
